AFTER a mid-season break that included a week’s riding in the French Alps, it was back to racing for Team CHR with the Yorkshire Champs at Ramsgill in North Yorkshire.

Only three members of the team made the trip for this one on what turned out to be a pretty straight-forward non-technical, yet fun-to-ride, track consisting of mainly grassy off-camber turns with a couple of wooden jumps (one over a stream) mixed in.

Unfortunately, although fun, the track did not suit the CHR riders and this showed in the results, Steven Turnbull taking ninth in Experts with a time of 1.29.560, Michael Strangeways 6th in Veteran on 1.43.727 and Alan Turnbull taking the win in Grand Veteran with a 1.40.791.

Next up was a wet weekend at Innerleithen for Round 5 of the Scottish series and Team CHR had a great turn out of 12 riders taking part in a field of over 300. This was also Rob Tait’s first race back since breaking his collarbone seven weeks earlier.

The track here was a great mix of fast and open, from jumps to tight and technical, with steep switchback turns to finish off with. The Cheviot Hill Riders, cheered on by great support from friends and family, came away with some great times and positions against some of the country’s fastest riders.

Experts: Steven Turnbull 10th 3.33.354. Juvenile: James Purvis 5th 4.06.454. Youths: John Shiell 9th 3.50.643, Joe Mallen 13th 4.03.227. Seniors: Thomas Pollock 8th 3.32.392, Shane Craig 22nd 3.43.540, Rob Tait 48th 4.00.438, Gordon Shiell 65th 4.14.862. Masters: Mark Sinclair 22nd 4.07.208. Veterans: Michael Strangeways 11th 4.19.316, Kevin Clark 13th 4.24.364, Alan Turnbull 14th 4.26.710.

The following weekend (September 25), it was the final round of the Northern Series at Alwinton near Rothbury. This track is very steep and rooty, a real technical challenge and just the sort of thing the CHR racers like and this showed in the results with two firsts, a second and a third from the six club members taking part.

The only downside was youth rider Joe Mallen having to go to hospital after a crash that resulted in a broken finger and cut arm, which meant he was unable to race on the Sunday and became the third CHR rider to be taken to hospital this season.

Times and positions were:

Expert: 2nd Steven Turnbull 2.24.206. Juvenile: 1st James Purvis 2.50.335. Senior: 5th Rob Tait 2.34.492, 7th Shane Craig 2.35.549. Veteran: 3rd Michael Strangeways 2.59.106. Grand Veteran: 1st Alan Turnbull 3.16.949.

The final race of the season for the club riders is the Northern Champs, which will be held at Hamsterely Forest on the weekend of October 22 and 23.
