The Northumberland Coastal Run between Beadnell and Alnmouth proved to be a spectacular sight on Sunday with almost 1,000 runners competing.

Overall winner was Carl Avery of Morpeth harriers, whilst Alnwick’s own Jo Gascoigne-Owens took the ladies title.

For both of these athletes it was their second victory in the event, with Avery producing back to back wins and Gascoigne-Owens winning again after her 2013 success.

Avery won in a brilliant 1.13.34, the fastest time in the race since 2008, and was almost four minutes clear of his nearest rival, Marc Fenwick from Tyne Bridge Harriers, who finished in 1.17.26.

Third was Sam Hancox of Morpeth Harriers in 1.17.29.

Gascoigne-Owens posted an excellent 1.27.17 to finish just ahead of two rivals after an excellent battle throughout.

The team prizes went to the Tyne Bridge Harriers trio of Mark Fenwick, Terry Scott and Paul O’Mara, whilst North Shields Poly won the female prize thanks to Jacqueline Penn, Michelle Thompson and Suzanne Thew.

The overall first Harrier to finish, just over a minute ahead of Jo, was new recruit Dan Turnbull. In his first race for the club he showed what a class act he is by clocking 1.26.05.

Adam Fletcher was the Harriers’ seco nd male finisher ahead of the amazing Dominic Harris! Dom’s progress this year has been quite astounding and shows no sign of abating.

For the ladies, behind Jo were Karen Kelly and Laura Stubbings, both of whom had good races. In terms of pb performances by Harriers there are simply to many to mention, but everyone ran really well!
