Club Championship – Peter Deeble Trophy: Across a course presented in absolutely immaculate condition by head greenkeeper Alan Golding and his team, tramlines in the morning dew left by golf trolleys down the first fairway indicated that the early starters had embarked on the 36-hole Peter Deeble Trophy Club Championship at Swansfield last Sunday. Peter, Alnwick’s very own double English Amateur Champion, was at the clubhouse chatting to old friends and enjoying the sunshine. Six-handicapper and league team member Dan Swordy scorched his way to a halfway lead with a sizzling gross one-under-par 69, a full four shots ahead of second-placed Joe Henderson, who was, in turn, one ahead of Dan Harrison. Steven Cooper, Guy Ridley and Barry Farrar were all a further shot adrift on 75. The second round was a true nailbiter, with Dan Swordy sadly not able to keep up the charge. He slumped to a disappointing 82 for a total of 151, but nevertheless still finished third overall. Andrew Tate, who had carded 76 in the morning and despite a five off the tee and eight at the sixth hole in the subsequent round still managed a score of 73 for a total of 149 and overall second place. The winner, however, was the grafter Guy Ridley, who, following a modest first round 75, ground out a second round 72 for a 147 total to win the Championship by two shots.

Bill Millar Shield: In this nett competition, Dan Swordy, whose gross 69 had lead the gross section also headed the nett with a 63, David Fachie was second on 67 and three players, Billy Brown, Marc Friar and Ken Burn followed one shot further back on 68. The final 18 holes saw young Sam Thomson improve on his morning round of 69 by two shots, giving him a winning score of 136, three shots ahead of second-placed Dan Swordy. Local lad Richard Brown, playing his first competitive game after returning to the club, returned two nett level-par 70s for a total of 140 and third place but only on countback from Colin Donaldson, Russell Cooke and Marc Friar, who all finished the day with a similar 140 nett score. Finally, I must say a big thank-you to Mick Hindmarsh and his catering staff who were on hand to supply breakfast baps, midday sustenance and a superb post-golf buffet which was enjoyed by the golfers, their families and friends who had congregated at the clubhouse for the conclusion of a most successful and enjoyable day.

Club Championship - Peter Deeble Trophy: 1 G Ridley 75+72=147; 2 A Tate 76+73=149; 3 D Swordy 69+82=151.

Seniors’ Peacock Trophy: Some of the best conditions so far saw Dave Hall take the Seniors’ Peacock Trophy on Saturday (is Dave really that old?).

On Sunday, the club Championship and Salver were played in fantastic conditions on a course in AAA condition (well done Geoff). Chris Ayre took the Championship for the first time and Mark Cowans took the Salver, again for the first time.

Well done to all who qualified and played.
