Hugh Roberts Trophy: In an attempt to confuse the weather gods the Hugh Roberts Trophy was played on Sunday at the Old Links last weekend and it appeared to work with not a drop of rain. However, the stiff westerly kept most scores low until Tony Lewis and Wayne Gair set to work. With no swingworm to confuse him, ‘Cookie’ played like a pro and with Wayne’s red hot Zebra putter scorching the greens off they went. A steady front 21 points was followed by a 23 point back nine blitz as they surfed home by four points from Andy Brown and Gerald Hadleigh Harper. They in turn held off Mel Patterson and Stephen Allan by virtue of their better back nine. In fourth place on 39 points in a three-way tie were new member Ross Young and Garry Henderson, the Lurcher and Mick Thompson and finally Paul Forester and Dave Green. There was only one two recorded, Lee Baxter’s 30-yard putt splintering the pin on the first and taking the money. The course was once again in superb condition to test the large field despite the wind. It will be in peak condition for the Seniors Open on September 6. There are still places so ring 01665 711596 to book a slot.
Coquet Salver 4bbb: 1 J Gray and J Hardy 76: 2 J Straughan and G Turnbull 79 (back nine): 3 C Douglas and D Hindhaugh 79.
Club Championship: Paul Routledge has retained the Club Championship he won for the first time last year, but only by the narrowest of margins. Lying in second place after the first round two shots behind Stuart Lowrey, and with an already strong wind ever increasing making conditions very tough, Paul beat Stuart by two shots in the afternoon for a 36-hole total of 187 and winning on a better back 18. Chris Ayre was third just one shot further back. Steven Lamb won the Club Salver on 87 ahead of Geoff Brown on 90.
Junior Patrons: On Saturday, Heather Allan won the Junior Patrons on 72 ahead of Sheilagh Curle and Steven Lamb both on 74.
Coffee morning: The club’s coffee morning is on this Saturday in the Glendale Hall at 10am. Any helpers are welcome.
