THE 2011/12 Winter League concluded last weekend under sunny spring skies, in stark contrast to the previous week which had to be cancelled in mid-round due to a severe lambing storm.

Youth prevailed in the final round.Topping the field of 44 players with a fine score of 40pts, Tom Greaves secured his third place in the final standings of the order of merit. In second place on the day and also second overall was Kevin Murphy, who beat Bob Shepherd into third place on countback, with both players carding 37pts.

In fourth and fifth, both with 36pts, were John Pentleton and Carl Green – a great result by the latter and by far his best showing of the winter. The overall winner of the Order of Merit for this season’s Winter League is Wayne Belisle with a fantastic total of 110pts.

The twos club overflowed with no less than six players last week – Alan Craigs and Bob Shepherd at the 15th and Wayne Belisle, James Cookson, Colin Donaldson and Cyril Jobson all holing out in two at the 17th.

The winter competitions conclude with a three-man Texas Scramble this Sunday, which will be followed by the presentation of the winter league prizes in the clubhouse.

Thanks go to Tim Pearson for the smooth and seamless running of his first season in charge of the Winter League and also to Melanie for some life-saving coffee and bacon butties enjoyed on chilly Sunday mornings.

THE Winter Championship for the JA Gray Claret Jug at the Old Links last weekend was certainly a close-run thing in the gentle north-westerly breeze.

Only two scores were under par and in first place was Wayne Gair with his not very good putter (his words).

Wayne shot a fine nett 64 off a gross 69 to hold off his grandfather by one shot. Jack Hindhaugh, unfortunately, gave a good impression of Albert DeSalvo over the last three holes to grab second place on his own.

There was no fanfare for Ian Common but a steady level par nett 66 gave him sole custody of third place.

A total of eight twos were recorded to blow apart the difficult par three myth.

Next week sees the return to the summer layout and the new remodelled bunkers on numerous holes.

Scores: W Gair 69-5=64; JW Hindhaugh 83-18=65; I Common 76-10=66.
