Alnwick

AS the temperature and sunshine levels rose so did the number of members competing last Sunday in the winter league at Swansfield.

The 35 members who turned out were headed in fine conditions appropriately by Steve Barron, who’s score of 37 points beat former Alnwick Town star Wayne Belisle into second place by two points.

The now familiar name in the frame of Barry Farrar made up the top three.

With the Winter League drawing to its conclusion things are hotting up at the top of the leaderboard, watch this column next week to find out who’s still in with a shout of the title.

Winter League: 1 S Barron 37pts; 2 W Belisle 35; 3 B Farrar 34.

A reminder to all members that a date has been set for the agm to be held in The Clubhouse on Friday, March 27, at 7.30pm.

With over half of the competition completed, the leading contenders are: 1 Malcolm Nesbitt; 2 Colin Wilson; 3 Gary Cowman; 4 Bill Falcus; 5 Mick Higginbottom.

WITH two weeks still left to play, Geoff Tong has sewn up this year’s Henry Curry Winter League.

A second-place finish on Sunday was enough to see him home.

Dave Hall took this week’s 10 points with 18 stableford points and now moves into second place overall on 46 behind Geoff’s 71. Jamie Bissett is third on 41.

WITH the winter layout at the Old Links near the end of its tenure, a yellow ball sweep was at stake last weekend.

Once again, a totally inaccurate weather report left the afternoon groups fearing the worst but getting the best and it showed on the leaderboard.

However, Team Scott bucked the trend to take the prize with 78 points along with a two as Gary’s Gang managed to stay one point ahead of the pack.

The pack on 77, were Team Twynholm from Morpeth Swamplands, Team Graham from Pier 81 and Team Henderson, fresh from clubhouse renovations. Team Glass also had the only other two club.

The prestigious J Gray Claret Jug for the winter champion is scheduled for March 12, so get to the entry sheet as it is filling up fast.
