THE wind was the only real winner last Sunday at Swansfield with no player reaching the winter standard scratch 37 points.
The player who beat everyone else, however, was ‘The Weatherman’ himself, Steve Barron. His score of 45pts was sufficient to see off the opposition on what might have been described as a bit of a blustery day.
Phill Ginger, Wayne Belisle and Mark Hodgson all came home with 33 points and had to be separated on countback.
Back in fifth came Tom Greaves, who still retains his spot at the top of the Winter League Order of Merit, some five points ahead of the field.
Moving up four places into second slot thanks to his second place last weekend is Phill Ginger.
Kevin Murphy and Ray Straker move down one place each, to third and fourth respectively.
Proving how open a competition the Winter League is this year with the new scoring system, Steve Barron leapt 16 places up to fifth by virtue of his win.
Boosting his winter holiday fund was Barry Farrar, who scooped the twos pot with the only two of the day, scored at the fourth hole.
Winter League week seven: 1 S Barron 35pts; 2 P Ginger 33; 3 W Belisle 33; 4 M Hodgson 33.
Order of Merit: 1 T Greaves 40pts; 2 P Ginger 35; 3 K Murphy 31; 4 R Straker 29.
Members please note that due to an underwhelming show of support, the curry and karaoke night on Saturday has had to be cancelled. In contrast, however, and proving the renewed popularity of the course and catering, apologies to anyone wanting to book a tee-time for the 4BBB Open competition next week as the day is now fully booked.
TURKEY Trot: 33pts (on last nine) L Cope; 33 P Sanderson; 33 J Porteous; 33 SW Archer; 32 C Brown.
Percy Wood Seniors
DESPITE very wet conditions underfoot, 16 brave souls set off on round seven of the Winter League.
In third place was Colin Wilson with 21 points (11 holes), second was Trevor Rutter with 22 and the winner was Dave Angus with the runaway total of 26 (and a new winter handicap).
WINTER Sweep (Seven): 37pts P Davies; 31 D Bell; 30 A Donaldson; 29 K Filer; 28 T Leightley; 28 W Fawcus; 28 K Swan.
THE final throw of the dice in the gamble for the William Landells Trophy was written last Saturday at the Old Links and, fittingly, it was Mick ‘Lucky’ Lucas who took the 10pts.
On a wild and tricky day, he mastered the course and the weather and won by two clear shots.
Close behind was Arkwright Arkley with a fine nett 68 and a clutch on nett 69 made up the rest of the top five.
Mark Shone did, but the sun didn’t, followed by Malcolm Allen and then Mick Beverley, whose six-point haul ensured he won the overall title.
Ken Bailey flew in from abroad to grab himself a turkey and Ian Gray finally got on the leader board with nett 70s.
The presentation night is this Friday at the clubhouse from 7pm so all prizewinners please try to attend.
AFTER the latest round of the winter league, Geoff Brown leads on 27pts, ahead of John Ewing on 18 and Dave Hall on 17.
Please note that it is club’s AGM tonight (Thursday) at 7.30 in the clubhouse. Please come along to the meeting to share your views and opinions.
