Alnwick show grit to snatch share of spoils

Alnwick II 2 Whitley Bay and Tynemouth IV 2

Alnwick have had some tough games recently, but they were determined to come out strongly and push their skills and fitness.

The team seemed to have that strength in the first 20 minutes and although Whitley had a couple of chances saved by Brown, Alnwick were first on the score-sheet from a penalty-corner, with Gray grabbing the goal.

Whitley equalised and continued to put Alnwick keeper Brown under pressure, in what was her first time in goal, but she saved a penalty flick.

Whitley then took the lead. A shot hit the post, but their player had quick reactions to take a second hit and score.

In the second half Alnwick put Newcastle under more pressure.

McMeekin fought hard for the ball on the wing and a powerful short-corner strike by Payne was skilfully saved by the keeper.

Then Alnwick made a break with Reed passing the ball to Lincoln at the top of the D, who created a one-on-one with the keeper causing her to come out of goal to defend, but Lincoln turned and reverse-hit the ball past the keeper to even the score.
