Alnwick hit the top with crushing win

Alnmouth and Alnwick Croquet Club

The club rounded off a successful season last Saturday with a crushing victory away to Belsay in the B Division of Croquet North’s League.

The 17-1 scoreline lifts them to the top position on games won, but they have played a match more than their nearest rivals.

Alnmouth and Alnwick players were Derek Gerrard (handicap five), Ted Sisterson (six), John Howie (seven) and Ann Doughty (eight). Belsay fielded Liz Hedley (10), Tony Turner (11), Edith West (12), Jean Thompson (12).

Results (Alnmouth and Alnwick names first): Gerrard beat Vest 7-0, bt Hedley 7-4, bt Turner 71. Sisterson bt Thompson 7-4, bt Turner 7-5, bt Hedley 7-3. Howie bt Hedley 7-6, bt Vest 7-4, Bt Thompson 7-1. Doughty bt Turner 7-0, bt Thompson 7-2, bt Vest 7-1.

Doubles: Gerrard and Howie lost to Hedley and Vest 6-7. Sisterson and Doughty bt Turner and Thompson 7-1. Gerrard and Doughty bt Hedley and Thompson 7-6. Sisterson and Howie bt Turner and Vest 7-2. Howie and Doughty bt Vest and Thompson 7-5. Sisterson and Gerrard bt Hedley and Turner 7-5.

Ann Doughty who had a particularly good match, has also retained her title in the club’s annual ladies championship.

The men’s title will be contested by the three who took part in the above league match.

Sisterson defeated Graham Legg in one semi-final while Gerrard and Howie meet in the other.
