Alnmouth romp home against lowly Morpeth

Alnmouth & Lesbury I (76-0)Morpeth I (73 all out)

Northumberland and Tyneside Senior Cricket League, Division A2

Alnmouth and Lesbury firsts returned to winning ways this week with a comprehensive victory over Morpeth.

Captain Tom Vickers asked the visitors to bat first and this decision seemed to pay off when Ben Oliver dismissed opener Thompson with only two runs on the board.

Adam Law and Chris Anderson then repaired the damage and patiently took the score to 32.

Once Law was dismissed, eight wickets then fell for just 36 as Morpeth collapsed to 73 all out in only 33 overs. Anderson top-scored with 24, one of only two Morpeth batsmen to reach double figures.

For Alnmouth all the bowlers returned excellent figures with the wicket takers being Ben Oliver (three) Jonny Ridley (three), Nick Denton (two) and Robin Tudor.

Denton bowled an impressive spell of 15 overs for just 29 runs.

The Alnmouth fielding was strengthened by the return of Tom Poole and they produced their best team display in the field this season, with six catches being held and a run-out, Poole taking two catches and achieving the run-out

Having to chase such a low total took the pressure off the Alnmouth openers, who were helped by a number of wide deliveries.

In quick time, and with the help of 28 extras, the Alnmouth openers of Ian Pearson (34 not out) and Paul Straker (14 not out) eased to victory in only the 13th over, to enable maximum points to be taken.

In their first season in the league following promotion, this victory leaves Alnmouth fourth in the table at the halfway point, just behind neighbours Alnwick whom they host on Saturday.
