A steely victory

Sheffield Hallum...5

Alnwick...8

ALNWICK travelled to Sheffield on a sunny day itching for a win.

The first eight minutes of the game didn’t bode too well for Alnwick as they found themselves 2-0 down.

Alnwick were awarded a penalty corner. A straight strike from Lincoln flew past the keeper’s foot and hit the back board.

Alnwick went back out strongly and a through-ball from Allen and some great play up the right saw Murray dive in front of the keeper and pop the ball round her, bringing the score to 2-2.

The next goal came from working the ball out from the back through midfield and up to Britton, who buried it.

Soon after Murray received a pass from Cook which she swept past the keeper, making the score 4-2 at half-time.

Sheffield came out strongly after the break but some neat play from Richardson, Humpries and Lincoln up the right gave Graham the opportunity for a one-on-one with the keeper, an individual battle she won.

A penalty corner relieved the pressure for Sheffield, making it 5-3.

Straight away, Alnwick got possession, allowing Cook to take on four players as well as the keeper and push the ball over the line.

Another swift break from Alnwick saw Graham pirouette around the keeper, scoring another goal and stunning the crowd into silence (7-3).

Some excellent defence from Horn, Allen and Richardson held up the Sheffield attack.

The home team managed to get a shot at goal but Frew’s quick reactions allowed her to save it with her stick while flying through the air.

They were then awarded two penalty corners from which they scored (7-5).

Within the last few minutes of the game, Alnwick was awarded another penalty corner which allowed a one-two pass from Cook to Lincoln, who stroked it into the bottom left of the goal to end the game 8-5 to Alnwick.
