TWO Alnwick Cricket Club stars are taking the regional cricket world by storm.
Alnwick opening bowler Gareth Bateman represented the newly-formed Northumberland Cricket Development Squad against the Durham Academy team at Blaydon.

Gareth who has played for the Northumberland & Tyneside League side returned figures of 5-21-1.

Bateman and team-mate Straker batted together with Northumberland needing 20 runs from just 2.2 overs, but, despite a fine batting display, narrowly failed to meet the required target, with Northumberland losing by three runs.

Gareth enjoyed the experience and has it given him the incentive to meet the higher standards required to push for a place in the Minor Counties Squad.

Chairman Bobby Dodds said: "Everyone at Alnwick is pleased with the recognition that Gareth has received and we hope that other young players will progress through the ranks with the hope of meeting the requirements of cricket at a higher level."

Meanwhile, talented 17-year-old Daniel Young will take his cricket career to the next step by moving to North East Premier League side Tynemouth once his school cricket commitments are completed.

Daniel, a pupil at The Royal Grammar School, Newcastle, has been an opening or number three batsman for Alnwick 1st team since making his debut as a 15-year old.

The former Alnwick and District Junior Sports Personality of the Year is has been a regular member of the Northumberland County cricket scene since he was 12 and last year played two games for the Northern Universities Student Cricket Team as part of their futures programme.

Daniel, who vice-captains for his school, has also completed ECB Level 2 Coaches' Award.

Mr Dodds said: "While the club is disappointed to loose a player of his calibre, we wish him the best of luck."

"The aim of the club will always be for the juniors to progress to the highest level possible and this is the highest level in the area."
