STUDENTS from Alnwick's newest martial arts club showed their true mettle when they fought through their gradings to win their belts.
Six DFM Kickboxing and two Directional Fighting Method students took part in the club's second examinations held at the Willowburn Sports Centre.
Tony Bulmar and Kevin Heatley were first up on the mats, aiming to gain their white and yellow belts in the club's advanced martial art.
A little nervous at first, the lads quickly found their focus, demonstrating the system's defence guard.
Once relaxed and into their rhythm, the knowledge they have gained in the past four months saw them fly through the foot and block drills.
They then showed good form and penetration in the pad work section and completed their grading with good display of simultaneously evading and blocking in the one-step fighting category.
Having finished one grading, the two lads then joined the DFM Kickboxers to see if they could also win the style's yellow belts.
They joined Craig Johnson, Mike Makin also taking their yellow belts and Mark Fox and Lisa Williams who were trying for their orange belts.
The first test was their fitness with each student required to pass the mark in repetitions of press ups, sit ups and squats.
Next it was time for them to show how good their punching and kicking techniques and combinations were against pads before moving onto the real thing in the continuous and points fighting grade finale.
The four students sparring for their yellow belts each had to spar for two minutes in both fighting categories, while Mark and Lisa had four bouts, two in each section, again lasting two minutes.
Experienced fighter John Winters stepped onto the mats as the student's opponent and did an excellent job of putting them under pressure testing both their fighting spirit and techniques.
With the grading over, each student was awarded their hard-earned belts by the impressed judging panel.
DFM Kickboxing instructor Darren Currah said: "The students showed true determination and the grading panel were very impressed with the standard they have achieved.
"Directional Fighting Method club has only been going for eight months and already the students are developing into excellent fighters with great potential for the future."
The school plans to enter local and national continuous and point style competitions later in the year.
