Damp start to season
Johnnie Johnson Alnwick and District Cricket League
WET weather during the week led to two of the six scheduled matches being cancelled on the opening day of the season on Saturday.
Howick v Kelso and Rock v Mitford were the victims, both grounds being waterlogged.
With Ulgham having resigned and joined the Northumberland League there is, unfortunately, an odd team out each week. On Saturday it was Warenford.
Of the matches played, there were wins for reigning champions Tillside (away to Wooler), Alnmouth and Lesbury (away to Shilbottle), Berwick (home to Red Row) and Embleton (away to Warkworth).
John Benn was the man-of-the-match at Berwick, hitting 74 out of a total of 155 for two and then claiming four for 25 as Red Row were dismissed for 109.
Tillside's 'Cam' McGregor top-scored with 63 not out in his side's six-wicket win over Wooler, while John Courtney's unbeaten 89 saw Alnmouth and Lesbury to an eight-wicket victory over Shilbottle.
Another batsman in form was Rod Turnbull who scored an unbeaten 75 in Embleton's total of 114 at the Castle Field at Warkworth.
Ali Gibson claimed six wickets for 45 runs but was eclipsed by John Wilkin's seven for 13 as Warkworth were dismissed for 73.
