Carling Cup Second Round (Tuesday, August 26, 2008).
A Michael Owen goal spared Newcastle's blushes against Championship side Coventry as the Magpies booked their place in the Carling Cup third round.

The Toon took the lead when James Milner's square ball was put into his own net by defender Scott Dann after 21 minutes.

Milner put Newcastle 2-0 up on 38 minutes before Clinton Morrison pulled one back for Coventry on the stroke of half-time with a 20-yard curler.

And Coventry grabbed a dramatic equaliser in the third minute of second half injury time through a Dann header taking the second round cup tie into extra-time.

But it was the Premier League side who showed their class, with England ace Owen finishing neatly to secure the win early in extra-time.

Coventry could have levelled again right at the end of the first period of extra-time when Elliott Ward's free header rattled the crossbar.
