THE Alnwick/Blyth alliance consolidated its standing in the third match of the Young Athletes League, at Monkton Stadium, last weekend.
With winds approaching gale force down the home straight, all hopes of fast times were blown away; however, once more Alnwick Harriers and Blyth rose to the challenge to finish third team. And with only one more match to go, Alnwick and Blyth current
ly lie third overall.
On the track the wind offered the sprinters no favours and everyone's times were well down, but there were still some notable performances. Making his debut at the Young Athletes League, 11-year-old Myles Foggon completed the 200m in 32.7sec and a brave performance from Caitlin Brown saw her finishing second in the 70m hurdles.
800m runner Chris Sweeney, looked uncomfortable in the strong winds, but managed to maintain a steady pace to finish second.
Also competing in the 800m, Louise Swordy incredibly ran a personal best time to finish third. Staging a comeback following a lay-off due to injury, Bethany Barker finished second in the 1500m. Charlotte Ramsey won the 1200m for Blyth.
Running his second 400m of the day, Bobby Hardy helped Alnwick/Blyth through to second place in the U15 4x400m relay. Alix Eastham and Georgina Anderson both ran strongly in the U13s 4x100m relay, to help take the team through to a further second place.
Alnwick fared better in the field events. Joseph Mallen comfortably won the long jump. Myles and Joseph both took second in the A and B high jump events. Matt Hardy also gained maximum points for Alnwick/Blyth in the high jump and he triumphed once more in the triple jump, winning the event with an incredible jump of 12.35m.
There were plenty of wins for Blyth in the field events too; U15 Kirsty Johnson won the long jump. U17 John Lazarri also won the long jump and the B-string triple jump and U15 Craig Charleton won both the discus and javelin.
The final Young Athletes League fixture is on Sunday, July 20, at Monkton Stadium.
