WEEKS of training paid off when Alnwick under-7s won the county cup in a hard-fought competition held at Ponteland on a cold and blustery mid-March Sunday.
March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, unlike March Alnwick under 7's came in like lions and finished off by roaring at their opposition in the final, showing they were Kings of the County.
Drawn in a pool of less rehearsed teams, Alnwick showed off their team commitment and well-rehearsed drills winning each match by a very comfortable margin, leading to them being worthy winners of their group.
Winning the group brought them to the semi-final against Ponteland, who were both bigger and stronger – a bruising battle began. Alnwick showed style and flare by winning by two tries to one.
The final was against Northern, another team that had won well right through the group stages. Again, Alnwick's opposition were larger and after the first half they were losing by two tries to one.
Alnwick never let a large confident team get in the way of victory. The second half was all Alnwick. Northern conceded four tries while Alnwick conceded just one, for a final score of Alnwick 25 Northern 15.
The pitch invasion at the end by parents, family and friends was in pure delight of seeing the boys play with so much determination.
It was a great achievement by the Alnwick lads.
Try scorers in the final were Will Stewart, Mark Humphries (2), George Dodds and Jamie Comber.
A few more facts and figures:
- 50 mins of rugby, 5 games.
- Scored 28 tries and conceded 8
- That's one try every 1min 47sec
- Conceded a try every 6min 15 sec
- In one game we scored 10 - that's a try a minute!! (not allowing for the 2 that they scored)
