ALNWICK Rugby Club hosted the annual Northumberland Colts Sevens tournament on Sunday and collected a big prize.
The club entered three teams, two under 17s and an under 18s.

The under 18s, captained by Dan Ginger, played out their group stage with two wins and two defeats, narrowly missing out on semi-final qualification.

The under 17s B side, a scratch side captained by Matthew Brewis, played well but were unable to progress from their group.

However, the stars of the show were the under 17s A team. They came second in the group stage after a narrow defeat in their final group game against Tynedale.

By the semi-finals they had managed to get fully into their stride and demolished Morpeth to set up a re-match with Tynedale in the final.

This turned out to be a close affair marked by some big tackles and fearsome clearing out by the Alnwick pack at the rucks. Having initially gone behind, Alnwick scored an excellent equalising try as their forwards began to dominate the game and the backs were able to show their talent with some dynamic running.

A decision to take a penalty shot at goal with three minutes remaining proved decisive with the team closing out an excellent game for supporters of sevens rugby (10-7).

A great start to the season and a good result for the home club.

Team: Tom Hall (capt), James Bone, Harry Butters, Ben Carvin, Lewis Dodds, Deakin Fisher, Jack Frater, Miles Pratt, Hugh Todd, Ben White.
