BOXING ace Ian Turnbull recovered from a standing count to successfully defend his ABA title in a regional bout.
Middleweight Ian, 23, from Widdrington, powered past Sunderland's Trevor Crewe with a points win after four rounds to retain the Gold Medal of the North East Senior ABA Championships.

It is the second year in a row that Turnbull has claimed the gong and the victory sends the Hylton Castle Northumberland boxer through to the National ABA quarter-finals in Sheffield at the end of the month where he will face Manchester's Carl Kirkham.

Turnbull fell at this stage last year but if he can overcome the talented Kirkham, who has been tipped as the best boxer in the group, then the Northumberland boxer will book his place in the semi-finals, with an eye to reach the finals in London.

Hylton Castle Boxing Club is also celebrating a first bout at a national venue win for Alnwick's Cyrus Patterson. The 13-year-old beat David McEwan by a unanimous points victory.

Cyrus' win was a supporting bout for Turnbull's Gold Medal victory, which was held at the Federation Breweries, Dunston, last Thursday.
