THERE was a first-class entry for the Ronnie Shepherd Four Wood Open Pairs on Sunday on the Alnwick green when after a long day's bowling two home pairs contested the final.
The husband and wife team of Mavis and Ken Liddle were the winners, beating John Hume and Roger Turnbull in a close final.
Losing semi-finalists were Michael Fairbairn and Tom Dixon who were beaten by Hume and Turnbull and Bob Calam and Bob Donkin
from Wooler who lost out to the Liddles.
Alnwick lady bowlers had a great start to their league season with a comprehensive win over Amble.
Alnwick, former holders of the league title beat Amble taking ten of the 12 points and winning by 64 shots to 39.
They followed that with a 60 shots to 47 win over Benfield taking nine of the 12 points available.
In the Ladies English Bowling Association EBA Triples – Lola Pollard, Susan Ratcliffe, and Yvonne Turner (skip) won both games and are now through to the county semi-finals at Ponteland.
Alnwick men got back to winning ways in the Clegg Cup League taking nine points to five against High Heaton despite losing two games, winning won and drawing one.
Alnwick picked up the six-point bonus when they won overall on shots with the triple of Ronnie Givens being 18 shots up to give Alnwick an overall five shots victory.
Alnwick continue to have an excellent run in friendlies. A mixed team of ladies and gents travelled to Saltburn and won by 170 shots to 70 with all six rinks up and they beat Northumbrian Police, for the first time in a number of matches winning all four rinks with that of George Heron the tops.
For the second week running there was no Nines league game.
