RACE ace Laura Weightman has successfully defended her English Schools 1500m title at a prestigious national competition.
The Lesbury running star won the gold medal at the prestigious Senior Girls 1500m at the ESAA Sainsbury's English Schools' Track & Field Championships in Gateshead on Saturday.

Laura, a Morpeth Harrier, snatched victory with a time of 4.31.08, seeing off competition from talented athletes, including Devon's Jess Burns.

The win makes it two in two for the golden girl, who grabbed the Intermediate Girls 1500m title last year.

The result is another prestigious mark on an already glowing running CV for the talented middle distance runner.

It also epitomizes her 'On Camp With Kelly' selection – an elite training camp for talented young middle distance athletes specially hand-picked by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes. Laura pipped a number of 'On Camp' stars to the gold medal, including second-placed Burns.

It was a performance which impressed Dame Kelly.

The 800m and 1500m Athens champion said: "It was great to see so many 'On Camp with Kelly' athletes performing well at the championships.

"For Laura to win a title for the second year in a row is a great achievement in a very competitive event."

Laura said: "I am absolutely thrilled. It was really good and I ran a good tactical race."
