VETERAN race ace Les Cavill has qualified for the Duathlon World Championships in Rimini, Italy, later this year.
The Alnwick Tri Club runner will compete in the 50-54 age category (M50), after a series of successful races.

Having finished second in the M50 category at the Hamsterley Forest Spring Duathlon '08, he travelled to Milton Keynes for the National D
uathlon Championships on April 13.

He had a fantastic first run, completing the 10K in 41min 43sec. A solid 40k bike followed in 1hour 12min, with the final 5K taking 25 minutes on tired legs.

That was enough to see Les to a 16th place finish in the category and book his place at the championships.

Les continued his fine form by finishing second (M50) at the City of Durham Duathlon – an event with two 5K runs and a 16mile bike ride. Les completed the challenge in 1hour 39min, while fellow member Chris Graham finished in a time of 1hour 39min.

There was also race joy for Verity Currie.

Competing last weekend, Verity won the Senior Female event at the Scarborough Duathlon. Her winning time – for a 10km run, 40km bike ride and a 5km run – was 2hours 41min.

With Verity on form she could be in contention to win Alnwick Triathlon which starts the triathlon season in the region on May 11. Many of the area's athletes have been building up to competing this, their first triathlon.
