WRESTLERS battled it out for honours at an annual Cumberland and Westmorland style wrestling tournament.
More than 60 competitors from around Northumberland, Scotland and Cumbria grappled for success at Rothbury Wrestling Club's third annual competition.

And it was eight-year-old Cade Whitfield who flew the flag for the Coquetdale club, snatching the U9 crown with a 2-0 victory over Thomas Davidson in the final.

Cade's victory capped an impressive showing from the hosts.

Nathan Birdsall, 17, came second in the U19 category, losing 2-1 at the final hurdle to current U18 champion Luke Benn.

Colleague Ross Wilkinson was also undone in the final, losing 2-1 in the 13.5stone class, while club coach Darren Whitfield was defeated by Richard Younger in the last stage of the men's all-weights section.

Other impressive club performances included Robert Leiper's second-place finish in the 15.5stone group and Scott McKenzie's third-place finish in the 11.5stone section.

Michael Old and Richard Mason, both of Rothbury, finished fourth in the 11.5stone and 13.5stone categories respectively.

Coach Darren said: "Everyone from the club wrestled well and there were some really good performances. It showed their dedication to the sport.

"It was a really successful event and we hope to hold it again next year."

Rothbury Wrestling Club trains at Dr Thomlinson's Middle School, Rothbury, on Wednesday evenings. U12s lock horns between 6.30pm and 7.30pm while all older categories practise between 7.30pm and 8.30pm. For more information contact Darren on 07734 785937.
