THE outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in Surrey has led to the cancellation of Powburn Show.
The event - due to kick off the north Northumberland show calendar - was due to be held today (Saturday, August 4).
Show chairman Nigel Dodds, who also owns the showfield, received a call from Defra late last night (Friday) to inform him that there was a ban on all movement of livestock.
Show treasurer David Penny said: "Having no horses, dogs and sheep would take the guts out of the show. Even the show dance has had to be canelled because it was due to be held in the field.
"We were all geared up for the show, the field has never looked so good, and obviously we are all disappointed."
Mr Penny was at the gate this morning to explain to people why the event was not taking place.
Among those who had travelled to the show were Rob and Bev Charlton, from Benton in Newcastle. Their children had entered many of the classes and were really looking forward to the day.
Bev said: "It's one of those things, but it's best to be on the safe side.
"We totally understand why it has been cancelled."
Shows are due to be held every weekend throughout the area until the end of the summer. It is unclear whether these will take place.
Keep up-to-date with the outbreak and its impact on this area on this website and in the Northumberland Gazette on Thursday.
