Surely I’m not the only person in Northumberland against dualling the entirety of the A1?
It appears that both the Lib Dems and Conservative parties in the area are using this as their main pledge in the run-up to the next general election, but I can’t help but think that the silent majority are less excited by the prospect of full dualling. Am I wrong?
In the interest of safety, I am certainly in favour of dualling (or creating passing lanes) on key stretches of the A1, but dualling the whole 40 or so miles of single carriageway is using a sledgehammer to crack a nut – financially, aesthetically and environmentally. Northumberland’s beauty, tranquility and lack of substantial urban development are among its key assets and we must be very careful not to compromise them.
Is it really a vote winner?
