Stop belittling our history

We have had the Liberal conference and now the Labour conference immediately following the problems in Syria.

I have listened to people supposed to be leaders here pronounce Britain having no longer a place in the leadership of nations, it now being poor and small during the debates over Trident and the submarines that need replacing.

I am a child of the war years with the memory of Dunkirk and then the pride of the adults who suddenly grew up.

‘The fury of the enemy may turn on us. Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this Iisland or lose the war. If we stand up to him all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad sunlit uplands. If we fail the whole world including the United States will sink into an abyss of a new dark age’.

These were the words of Winston Churchill in the House of Commons in 1940. Did he believe we could not influence the world?

Present day politicians seem to want to write off this small country which has a great history.

We influenced the world then and the Commonwealth supported us and later the USA.

Small does not mean lack of influence. It only does if people play small. All we had then was 331 Spitfires and Hurricanes plus 300,000 men rescued from Dunkirk to help take on the might of the Nazi empire that had already walked through all the nations of mainland Europe.

Stop this belittling of this great historic land which is always for the free.
