Sporting talent to be proud of

AS someone who attended the Alnwick and District Sports Council Awards evening last Friday at the Playhouse I am writing to thank all of those involved in this splendid evening.

The hard working officers of the Alnwick and District Sports Council delivered an extremely smooth, well organised evening that allowed us to celebrate exceptional sporting achievement in the district.

My sincere congratulations go to all those nominated and to the winners of each category in particular.

The dedication of all the sportsmen and sportswomen was ably demonstrated in all of the carefully crafted citations but the message of this commitment and dedication was further illustrated by an inspirational talk given by guest of honour Nick Gillingham MBE.

The range of sporting categories did allow us to celebrate a very large number of participants in a very wide range of sports and if that was not enough we were also able to honour the unsung heroes who spend hours of their own time supporting their own clubs.

It is also a good time to mention the hundreds of parents who give our athletes terrific logistical support.

The final award to heroic Gayle Bloomfield as Northumberland Gazette Sports Personality for 2011, was a superb example of courage and a determination to overcome against all odds and was a perfect ending to a perfect evening.

In closing, it would be also appropriate to congratulate the Northumberland Gazette for their weekly excellent sporting coverage showing, like the awards night, that sport is truly alive and well in Alnwick.
