I was woken up this morning by a news that July 23 is the day of the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh next year.
This reminded me that in 1963 Lord Lambton was promised that the A1 to Edinburgh would be dualled for the Empire Games in 1964 when he asked a question from the floor of the House of Commons.
That was a promise by a Conservative government and the A1 then was a major road from England to Scotland.
There have been various promises since by both Labour and Conservative governments but all they have achieved is downgrading the road through Northumberland so the Highways Agency only now covers 60 per cent of the maintenance through the county.
That means by next year, and I doubt they will complete any upgrade by then, it will be 50 years of failure of promises to us, and shows how little London understands and appreciates the border country.
