PLAYHOUSE: Band served up a real treat

As Deputy Mayor of Alnwick I was asked to stand in for the Mayor who was away and attend the 20th anniversary concert of the Alnwick Playhouse Concert Band last Saturday.

What a great evening. A 60-strong band, trumpets, trombones, flutes, clarinets, oboes, saxophones, horns, tubas, drums and a euphonium.

What a fantastic sound they made, strongly directed by conductor Ray Thompson.

The programme varied from the Muppets to Holtz, from Danny Boy to Skyfall.

The songs of the Great War had me singing along (very quietly), remembering the words taught me by my grandfather, who had been a sergeant in the trenches.

The Last Post left the auditorium in complete silence for a few moments, and then the atmosphere quickly changed again with selections from Chicago. The introduction of each selection was brilliantly made and the whole evening was a triumph for a very accomplished band.

Thank you very much for inviting a representative of Alnwick Town Council to attend and may you go from strength to strength in the future.
