HELICOPTERS: Ninety minutes is not progress

For over 51 years, during periods when the island was cut-off from the mainland during twice daily high tides, many Holy Island residents and visitors have been flown to hospital by the Whirlwind and Sea King helicopters based originally at RAF Acklington and later at RAF Boulmer, both bases being only a few minutes flying time away.

202 Squadron was officially disbanded on September 30, and the rescue service transferred to civilian operators Bristow Helicopters Limited based on Humberside, Prestwick and Lossiemouth, all of which are some 90 minutes’ flying time away, hardly an improvement.

To all the members past and present of 202 Squadron, thank you for your professional support over the years.
