Are there any other readers who, like me, feel our quest to have free parking in Alnwick to boost trade and tourism in the town has backfired?
By 9am, the town’s car parks, especially on Greenwell Lane, are 90 per cent full, obviously filled by the town’s workforce, who previously used the back streets and therefore released the car parks for visitors.
Do we need a rethink, perhaps introducing a time restriction so that these car parks also need the use of the time disc system?
In hindsight, if perhaps instead of introducing free parking in the north of the county, charges had been introduced in the south, the council would still have been able to afford free school travel for the over-16s.
