BOOK: A good tale, but nothing more

I read with great interest about the new book on Bertram of Bothel and look forward to reading it. However, it is what it is – legend with no truth in it.

To start with, the particular Bertram had no brother, and the depiction in the Hermitage is of the Nativity.

The legend was written by a bishop called Percy, who wished to prove he was one of the Percy family.

They, however, would not accept this as his family were trades people.

It makes for a good tale, exciting, sad and gallant, but that is all it is.
