Early this morning, walking our dog along the bank of Wooler Water, I heard a bird calling out in distress on the opposite bank.

I then saw a crow take a chick from the scrape of a ringed plover.

Immediately after, the adult ringed plover stood on a piece of wood next to the scrape calling for its stolen chick.

It was the saddest sound I have ever heard.
