‘You don’t think there’s someone who’s that sick’

A north Northumberland woman has spoken out after someone ‘despicable’ targeted her cat with white spirit and hair clippers.

Kelly Cottage, of Bailiffgate in Alnwick, let her cat Lico out last Wednesday afternoon as usual at about 4pm.

But when she returned around 11.30pm she was covered in an oily substance and hair had been cut off her face, back and tail.

“I was in complete shock, then I was really scared for her because I could see she was covered in an oily substance,” the 28-year-old said. “She was trying to clean herself.”

Kelly contacted the RSPCA and the vet and was advised to try to clean the substance off using washing-up liquid.

Lico was taken into the vet’s the following morning, where the oily substance was identified as white spirit or some other paint solvent.

The vet also thought from past experience that the hair had been cut off using clippers.

Lico’s skin was very agitated from the white spirit and she was given injections as well as antibiotics and painkillers.

Kelly said: “It’s disgusting and despicable.

“I have worked in a dog shelter and I have seen cruelty to animals but you don’t ever think it will happen to you, I know that sounds small-minded.

“Especially in a small place like Alnwick, you don’t think there’s someone who’s that sick in the head, who thinks it’s funny.”
