Writers join forces to spread across the world

A GROUP of technical writers in the North of England have banded together to found a co-operative.

Exact Text LLP has its headquarters in Holystone and links technical writers across the north, working together using broadband and Skype.

Co-founder Margaret Ranken said: “When I moved to this location, I had a steady stream of work that I could do from anywhere.

“The credit crunch put an end to that and I found myself a long way from potential clients. Joining the co-operative has allowed me to take on more clients and larger contracts than would be possible as a solitary freelancer. It also helps me to develop a marketing strategy and provides moral support when I’m preparing sales pitches. I no longer have to worry about my job being sold from under me.”

Malcolm Burke, who also helped start up the group, said: “Online working has enabled us to bring technical specialists together to provide a service for clients across the world that is independent of the location of our members.

“The co-operative structure means we can flexibly scale our resources to clients’ needs while providing work and support to individuals. This kind of home working is going to be increasingly important in keeping rural areas thriving and its growth will depend on local government supporting superfast rural broadband connections.”

Another co-founder, Barbara Ballantyne, said: “The LLP structure allows me to combine the benefits of working for a company with the flexibility of a freelancer.”

The three founder members currently have clients in locations ranging from Thirsk to Dubai. Meanwhile the group is looking to recruit more members and pursuing sales leads wherever they find high-tech companies that need to communicate the benefits of their products in clear English.
