A zebra crossing is to be provided near St Paul’s RCVA schools, along South Road, towards the Oaks roundabout.

Meanwhile, a light-controlled crossing is being installed just south of the entrance to Royal Oak Gardens.

Work will start on the zebra crossing on Monday. Northumberland County Council says that traffic disruption will be minimised with working hours being kept to between 9.30am and 3pm to avoid peak times. Traffic movements will be managed through sets of traffic lights at each junction.

Alnwick Town and County Coun Gordon Castle said: “These crossing points are just what is needed in locations where I, other councillors, and members of the public have been seeking them.”

Fellow ward member Coun Heather Cairns said: “The new crossings will improve road safety for children walking to school, which is especially important since the opening of the new high school in Alnwick last September.”

Coun Ian Swithenbank, cabinet member for local services at the county council, added: “We are reducing speed limits on roads near to all schools in the county to 20mph and this is proposed for Alnwick schools later this year.”

The preliminary work on the lights-controlled crossing has already taken place.
