RANGERS on the Farne Islands had to tackle a 40-stone seal at the weekend after he became trapped in a fishing net.
On Saturday morning, the bull grey seal was spotted on Staple Island with a green rope around his neck, revealing that he was caught in a net.
Head ranger David Steel assessed the situation to gauge the strength of the animal, which fortunately had been weakened by the net and decided they could intervene.
“Three of us got a tarpaulin cover and put it over its head,” said David. “We kept it pinned while I cut the net away from around its neck, otherwise it would have killed it.
“They have got a lot of power in their neck muscles and head, that’s why we covered its head, to stop it from biting us.
“We used full bodyweight so it couldn’t wriggle away.”
