WEATHER UPDATE: Property 'expected to flood' in two Northumberland locations tonight

Flooding to property is expected in two Northumberland locations this evening as river levels continue to rise.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for the Coquet at Brinkburn and Weldon, and says flooding to property is expected from 8.30pm.

It warns of water levels rising further though this evening and remaining high overnight.

Its website says: 'Rain through the night has caused the River Coquet to rise. River levels are expected to rise throughout the evening and are expected to peak early tomorrow morning (6th January 2016). Flooding to property is expected from approximately 20:30pm this evening.

'Further rainfall is expected overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. We are closely monitoring the situation. This message will be updated by 10pm or earlier if the situation changes.'

A flood warning has also been given for the River Wansbeck at Bothal and Sheepwash, with the Environment Agency warning that flooding to property, in particular at Sheepwash Gardens, is expected from 8.15pm.

The Agency says: 'Rain through the night has caused the River Wansbeck to rise. River levels are expected to rise througout the evening and are expected to peak early tomorrow morning (6th January 2016). Flooding to property, in particular at Sheepwash Gardens, is expected from approximately 20:15pm this evening. Further rainfall is expected overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. We are closely monitoring the situation. This message will be updated by 10pm or earlier if the situation changes.'

The Met Office today issued an amber warning of rain for today and also extended its yellow warning of rain until 6am.

There are 10 existing flood alerts in Northumberland: Coastal rivers of north Northumberland, Upper Coquet, Lower Coquet, Rede, Wansbeck, Till, the south bank of the Tweed, the Pont and Blyth, the Tyne, Cockshaw Burn at Hexham and other small watercourses in the area.

Nationally, there are 26 flood warnings (flooding is expected; immediate action required) and 117 flood alerts (flooding is possible; be prepared).
