WATCH: New Aldi store opens in Northumberland town

Long queues formed outside Alnwick’s new Aldi shop for its official opening this morning, as eager customers waited for the chance to get their hands on special prizes to mark the launch.

Katrina Robertson, from Embleton, was first in the queue, having been there since midnight. Her reward was a golden ticket for a 42-inch television, which she was presented with by store manager Kyle Davis.

Other items up for grabs for lucky customers included a smartphone, bottles of single-malt whisky and a variety of other Aldi goodies.

Sausage and bacon sandwiches were also handed out and customers are able to enjoy a variety of food sampling throughout the day.

The store, which is supported by more than 100 car-parking spaces and has created 25 new jobs for the community, was officially opened at 8am by Mayor of Alnwick Bill Grisdale.
