Urgent work to repair a gas main in Alnwick has caused traffic chaos in the town, in the first of an expected nine weeks worth of work.
Northern Gas Networks is upgrading the ageing metallic mains along South Road and work began on Monday by the war memorial.
Three-way traffic lights are currently in operation for traffic coming along Denwick Lane and going in and out of town.
But at peak times it is causing delays.
Motorists have been blocking the Hotspur Tower and the junction at Prudhoe Street and Wagonway Road, which has brought traffic to a standstill.
Cars, coaches and other vehicles are also backing up along Greenwell Road.
The work is due to take up to nine weeks to complete, moving along South Road as well as some work on Belvedere Terrace and Alnmouth Road.
