Motorists in Northumberland are being warned of treacherous driving conditions tonight as rain has continued to fall throughout the day,
Standing water on many roads is causing a particular hazard and some minor roads have been closed.
Council workers have been trying to clear a flood on South Road in Alnwick, near Sainsbury’s, as our video shows, but there is still a large volume of water there and drivers should negotiate it with care.
The coast road from Alnmouth to Warkworth is plagued with large puddles, which are difficult to see in the dark.
The A1 at Belford was just passable north and south, and the A697 was closed in both directions from just past the Glanton turn to Powburn.
Northumbria Police said: “Driving the same way you would in dry conditions could be dangerous and lead to an accident so please be responsible.
“Some roads are only passable with care but we would advise people not to travel unless absolutely necessary. If you do need to drive then take your time, remain patient and slow down.
“Officers have being working hard with partner agencies to minimise disruption across the force area and no major roads have been closed. Our officers will be on duty throughout the night and if anyone has any concerns about the flooding they should contact the relevant local authority or the police by phoning 101. In an emergency, always dial 999.”
