A walker was airlifted to hospital today after suffering severe head and neck injuries in a 30ft fall from a waterfall in Northumberland.

The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) was initially called to rescue the woman north of Bellingham just before noon.

The Bellingham Community first responder also attended and passed the location and details of the casualty to the Search and Rescue helicopter, which was scrambled from Prestwick.

Northumberland Ambulance Service, Northumbria Police and mountain rescue teams were also in attendance.

The woman was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. A GNAAS spokesman said she was in a stable condition and was taken to a speciality treatment unit.
