The coastal village of Boulmer took a step back in time this bank holiday weekend when it was invaded by smugglers.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, Boulmer was notorious for being the smuggling capital of Northumberland and on Saturday night, the pirates were back.

It was all in the name of giving, though, as the Boulmer Volunteer Rescue Service was holding its main annual fund-raising event.

The pirates and smugglers beer evening included a display by the service’s lifeboat, which is independent of the RNLI, Zorbing on the sea and curry and music into the night in the boathouse.
