Hundreds of people turned out to say goodbye to former prisoner of war Jack Phillips in Rothbury yesterday.
A guard of honour lined the path into All Saints’ Church as the coffin, draped in the union flag and adorned with Jack’s war medals, was carried inside.
Giving the eulogy, friend Alan Fendley said Jack had enriched people’s lives and despite his horrendous experiences during the Second World War, he went on to lead a long and happy life in Rothbury for many years.
The Last Post was played before his coffin was taken out of the church.
A private interment followed the service.
