Police have named the man who was killed in yesterday's crash between a lorry and a digger on the A1 in north Northumberland.

As previously reported by the Gazette, at around 3.50pm, police were called to a report of a collision between an HGV and a digger near the Shilbottle exit on the southbound carriageway to the south of Alnwick.

Both vehicles were travelling south in the nearside lane, when for reasons yet to be established, the HGV hit the rear of the yellow JCB digger. This caused the digger to leave the road and catch fire, while the driver was thrown from the vehicle.

The deceased has now been named as Stephen Alan Clarehugh, aged 54, of Bockenfield Cottages, Bockenfield, Felton.

Inquiries into the collision are ongoing and any witnesses, or anyone with any information, should contact police on 101 extension 69191 quoting reference 698 08/12/15.
