One of the pensioners who died in a fatal collision in Northumberland was a passenger in one of the cars, not the driver.

Yesterday, Northumbria Police named the two victims as Katherine Scott, 93, from the Morpeth area, and Charles Henry Chester, 86, from the Bedlington area.

Information released by the police said Mrs Scott was the driver of a Vauxhall Astra and Mr Chester the driver of a Nissan Micra.

But today, police confirmed that Mrs Scott was a passenger in the Astra.

The driver of the Astra remains in hospital. Her condition is not believed to be life-threatening. Her identity has not been released by police.

The collision happened on the A192 Shields Road, near Hartford Bridge, south west of Bedlington, on Wednesday.

Inquires are continuing. Anyone with information can contact police on 101, quoting reference 399 08/04/15.
