This was the scene at this morning’s crash on the A1, north of Alnwick, which left a man with life-threatening injuries.

The two-vehicle collision happened on the A1 just after 8am this morning.

The seriously injured man was given blood at the scene and anaethetised before being flown to the RVI by the Great North Air Ambulance. A second man was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital with less serious injuries.

This is the third time blood has been administered by the air ambulance team since the Blood on Board scheme was introduced in January.

The new service to carry blood on the air ambulances was devised by emergency specialists at The Great North Air Ambulance Service and the Newcastle Hospitals’ Major Trauma Centre to help save lives.

The road between the Denwick and South Charlton turn-offs remains closed with a diversion in place.
