UPDATE (6.10pm): Elderly woman in hospital after fatal A1 crash

An elderly woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a fatal two-vehicle crash on the A1 in Northumberland today, in which a pensioner was killed.

At 12.14pm, police received a report of the collision on the northbound carriageway near to the junction with Newton on the Moor, involving a Mitsubishi Outlander 4x4 and a Nissan Micra car.

An 82-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Micra, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Micra, who has been described by police as elderly, is currently in the Newcastle Freeman Hospital with serious injuries.

No one else was seriously injured and inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Police, fire and ambulance crews, as well as the Great North Air Ambulance Service, were in attendance.

Part of the road was closed in both directions but reopened this afternoon.
