A MAN has been killed in a crash on the A1 on Wednesday afternoon.

A red Ford 4x4 vehicle travelling south overturned following the collision and landed on the northbound carriageway just before the turn-off to Stannington at around 2pm.

The man has been named as Michael Parnell, 46, from Stanley in County Durham.

Two other occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two men, aged 44 and 49, have now been released from hospital.

Crews from the North East Ambulance Service and two rescue teams from Pegswood Community Fire Station attended the scene.

The A1 was closed in both directions near Morpeth for more than five hours and thousands of motorists had to find alternative routes home. Traffic was diverted to local roads, including along Station Road.

The victim will not be identified until all family members have been informed, police say.
