A DAY to remember for the people of Northumberland is finally underway, as the last preparations are made before the Queen arrives.

Crowds are starting to build as people make their way into Alnwick to be part of this historic day, and excited residents are waiting at the station to welcome the Royal party.

The latest news is that they are due to arrive at Alnmouth Station at about 10.25am before travelling to the youth hostel in Alnwick for the official opening.

Around 11am the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will go to Alnwick Castle and Garden for a party to celebrate carers and volunteers from across Northumberland, at the invitation of the Duchess of Northumberland in her capacity as Lord Lieutenant.

At 2pm, residents and schoolchildren will gather in the town centre to welcome the Queen as she goes on a walkabout on Bondgate Within.

The Met Office weather forecast shows sunny intervals with light rain showers from 1pm, although the rain has now started in Alnwick.
